A lot of times, when someone is going through tough times financially, they may need money but either are not willing to ask for it or are too proud to accept a small gift or a loan that you might be willing to give. Instead of going out and buying a gift for a special occasion, give online gift cards to a generic store and let your recipient buy whatever they want (or need). If they choose to spend it on staples like food or diapers or school supplies instead of buying something fun or frivolous, that is their choice.
Maybe your finances are fine right now, but if you’re like most people, you have been through tough times before. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes and remember back to your financially-strapped days. Would you have been offended if someone had given you a gift card instead of a gift? You might have balked at a cash handout but a gift card in lieu of an actual gift might have been an answer to prayer.
When times are tough, people don’t really want gifts … they want money. Giving online gift cards is in essence the same as giving money. And where the gift card can be used can make a huge difference in a person’s life if they are struggling financially.
So whether it is for Christmas or a birthday or even an anniversary gift, if you choose the right store, you are in essence giving the recipient money to spend however they need.
